Who Was Yasuke?
Yasuke was a real historical figure who lived during Japan’s Sengoku period and is known for serving the warlord Oda Nobunaga. He is one of the most unusual people recorded in Japanese history because he was originally from Africa and became part of the samurai world.
At that time, very few foreigners had ever come to Japan, so Yasuke attracted a great deal of attention. Although only a small number of records about him exist, his name appears in historical documents and missionary reports, confirming that he was a real person.
Today, Yasuke is sometimes called the “African Samurai,” and his story has become well known around the world.
Where Did Yasuke Come From?
Yasuke is believed to have come to Japan from Africa in the 16th century. His exact birthplace is not certain, but some historians believe he may have come from Mozambique, Ethiopia, or another part of East Africa.
He arrived in Japan with Jesuit missionaries, who were traveling through Asia to spread Christianity. Yasuke may have worked as a guard or servant for one of the missionaries.
At the time, the Japanese people had rarely seen someone from Africa, so Yasuke’s appearance made a strong impression wherever he went.
Yasuke Meets Oda Nobunaga
Yasuke became famous after meeting Oda Nobunaga, one of the most powerful warlords of the Sengoku period.
Nobunaga was known for his curiosity about foreign cultures and new ideas. When he first saw Yasuke, historical records say he was surprised by his appearance.
One story says Nobunaga asked for Yasuke’s skin to be washed because he thought the color might be dirt. After realizing it was natural, Nobunaga became very interested in him.
Nobunaga later allowed Yasuke to stay near him, and some records suggest that Yasuke was given a sword and served as a retainer. Because of this, many people believe Yasuke held a position similar to a samurai.
Was Yasuke Really a Samurai?
It is not completely certain whether Yasuke was officially a samurai, but historical sources show that he held a special position.
He lived close to Nobunaga, carried weapons, and took part in important events. During the Sengoku period, social class could sometimes change based on ability and loyalty, so it was possible for someone from outside Japan to become part of the warrior class.
For this reason, many historians consider Yasuke to have been a samurai or at least a warrior with samurai status.
Yasuke and the Incident at Honno-ji
In 1582, the famous Honno-ji Incident took place. A general named Akechi Mitsuhide attacked Oda Nobunaga, leading to Nobunaga’s death.
Records say that Yasuke was with Nobunaga at the time of the attack. After the battle, Yasuke was captured by Mitsuhide’s forces.
Instead of executing him, Mitsuhide reportedly sent Yasuke back to the Jesuit missionaries, saying he was not Japanese and should not be punished in the same way as Nobunaga’s samurai.
After this event, Yasuke disappears from historical records, and his later life remains unknown.
